How to Choose a Storage Tank

Start with what you're storing. The tank's specific gravity (SG) rating must be at or above the weight of your liquid — then pick the size that fits your space and volume.

1.0 SG · Black

Water Tanks

  • Water and liquids up to 8.3 lb/gal
  • FDA-compliant, NSF/ANSI 61 resin for potable water
  • Black wall blocks sunlight to prevent algae
  • Two 16" lids plus an air bleed for a full fill

1.5 SG · White

Chemical Tanks – 1.5 SG

  • Liquids up to 12.5 lb/gal
  • Thicker walls than a water tank
  • Liquid fertilizers, DEF, water treatment chemicals, waste oil

Frequently Asked Questions

What is specific gravity and which rating do I need?
Specific gravity compares a liquid's weight to water (8.33 lb/gal = 1.0). Divide your liquid's weight per gallon by 8.33 — for example, a 10 lb/gal liquid is 1.2 SG, so you'd need a 1.5 SG tank. When in doubt, size up for an extra safety margin.
Can I store chemicals in these tanks?
Yes, within the tank's SG rating — but always confirm your chemical is compatible with polyethylene and the fitting and gasket materials. See the chemical resistance chart in the Elkhart Technical Guide, or ask your chemical supplier.
What fittings come with the tanks?
Standard tanks include a 1.5" inlet and 2" outlet female NPT bulkhead fitting, plus a 16" threaded manway lid (water tanks include two lids and an air bleed). Additional fittings, valves and tie-down kits are available — call us for options.
How long do tanks take to ship?
Tanks are made to order and typically ship in about 3–4 weeks, by freight from the manufacturer. We'll confirm timing when we contact you about your order.
Can these tanks be buried or pressurized?
No. These are above-ground tanks for atmospheric (vented) storage only. Install them on a flat, level pad that fully supports the bottom.
What is the warranty?
5 years from purchase, extended to 10 years when you register the tank with the manufacturer within 30 days. See the full warranty.
